James P. Hicks has amassed an array of over 1,500 items depicting Negro stereotyping, photography of African Americans engaged in their normal lives, and rare historical items documenting African American’s political, cultural and historical experience. He has made his collection available for exhibition through researched traveling exhibits and individual item loans to museums and curators.
Any traveling exhibit from the Hicks’s collection includes positive, normative images of African Americans in contrast to any negative stereotypical items. “My hope for the collection is that it can be exhibited to a broad audience to raise awareness of the determination, fortitude and heart of African Americans. My traveling exhibits are intended to create a celebration of triumph of the African American spirit. Individual loaned items will also help other curators to tell their stories.”
Photos of past exhibits allow the viewer to sample the diversity of items in the collection. To discuss the specifics of an existing traveling exhibit, a custom exhibit for shared development, or the availability of items which might supplement your exhibit, please contact Mr. Hicks.
